It has a long name but it’s a little village with a big marina and plenty of services. Because of this, St-Jean-de-Losne has everything a canal boater would ever want. It’s where the Saone River joins a number of different canals leading to different parts of France.
St-Jean-de-Losne is where we bought Laura the boat from and where we’ve spent quite a bit of time getting everything ready. It’s close to Dijon which is a major regional city that is easy to get to by train. Once in Dijon you can catch a train to SJdL and then a 20 minute walk to town or you can catch a bus from Dijon.
It’s a beautiful place, so I’m just going to show you lots of pictures and videos as they will tell a much better story.
We spent about a week in the marina, getting the boat ready. It was really peaceful, except when the frogs decided it was time to shout at each other throughout the night.
One of the things we love about SJdL is the canal boating community. Because it’s such a central place with lots of services we’ve met plenty of like-minded people who have been able to give us lots of practical advice. Every Wednesday afternoon canal boaters from all over meet up at the Port du Brasserie pub for sundowners.
The evenings are spectacular in SJdL, especially when it’s so still and warm at 9:30 at night. The images below have not been touched up at all (we’re not that clever). Yes, I think you can safely say that Ivan and I are big fans of St-Jean-de-Losne.
Magnificent photos of an extraordinary adventure! You two are so inspiring.
