This is just a very quick post to show the countryside surrounding St-Jean-de-Losne, which is a place Ivan and I know and love. It was a beautiful day, so we decided to explore the Saone River and the French canals via bikes. Here’s some action footage of me on my bike heading towards the tiny village of Saint Symphorien with Ivan commentating. I don’t think we’ll be invited to take part in the Tour de France any time soon.
Opposite the Saone River we found some very fat and happy-looking cows. The grass was thick and there was plenty of water. For those involved in agriculture back home in Australia, it’s probably best not to look!
The cows were very clever and were able to pump their own water to drink. We were very impressed!
Further along we rode next to a canal. The best part about traveling the French canals via bikes or on foot is that the canal paths are nice and flat. The only time there are any inclines are when there are locks, which in this area is quite infrequent.
Ivan was filming and I rode ahead where I spotted a blueberry bush with ripe blueberries! Well I thought I did.
Alas, we have no idea what those blue berries were. They certainly weren’t actual blueberries. So much for fresh berries for dinner.
Further along the canal meandered past an old mill which now operates as a restaurant. There were many buildings that we’d love to get our hands on to renovate. This would make a great AirBNB!
I think you can see that we’re big fans of France, in particular the smaller towns, villages and the countryside. It’s not hard to love this place. It’s so beautiful and the people are very friendly. We’re very much enjoying our break from work.
Bonjour Ali et Yvan,
effectivement ce ne sont pas des myrtilles mais des prunelles.
Ce n’est pas très bon manger mais les anciens faisaient un très bon alcool avec ces fruits.
A bientôt

Hello Ali et Yvan,
Indeed these are not blueberries but sloes. ( prunus spinosa)
It’s not very good to eat but the ancients made very good alcohol with these fruits.
See you soon
